PHC Programs

EMERGENCY FOOD DEPOT (EFD) ~ The EFD supports families and individuals experiencing food shortages and hunger. About fifty households a month access the food depot on Gabriola. One third of those being fed are children.

SOUP SOCIAL ~ Every Monday and Tuesday, 10 am to 1 pm warm soup, coffee and muffins are served to community residents. All are welcome. Silva Bay generously supplies the nourishing soup.

THE FOOD DEPOT GARDEN ~ The Food Depot Garden supplies fresh vegetables for distribution to folks living in poverty.  The garden is tended by volunteers and our summer student.

KIDS IN THE GARDEN ~ How young is too young to learn about food security? Never too young at PHC! Ten children are registered to work in their garden plot this year. The Kids in the Garden program is meant to bring children together in an inter-generational and diverse environment to participate in gardening activities that will foster an awareness of and respect of the natural environment and its impact on human lives.

It is a program that will teach children basic gardening skills and knowledge of how food is grown. The purupose is also to introduce the idea of food security and the knowledge that not everyone always has enough to eat and to this end a row of food will be planted for the PHC Emergency Food Depot. Appreciation to EJ Hurst for volunteering to coordinate the program.

DRAGON GARDEN FOR SENIORS ~ A project coordinator has been hired and an advisory group of seniors is presently working at the design and construction of this special garden. See Press Release for more information by clicking here ~ Press Release
